- Zaire Jointed Female Figure
Product Description
Older carving measuring approx. 24 inches tall
This unusual old wood carved figure is from Zaire (now called the Democratic Republic of the Congo), and I am not sure of the tribal affiliation. It is approximately 24 inches tall, and maximum width about 5 inches across the shoulder. It is carved from a single piece of wood, except for the attached articulated arms. Details of the carving can be seen in the pictures below. The arms are attached with a natural plant fiber cord running through the figure. The attached "clothing" around the hips is also twisted cloth fiber.
I would guess this carving dates from 1950-1970, but one can never be sure about the ages of African carvings. It has a very nice used patina. There are the normal signs of usage, with light rubbing and some soil in the grooves. I have done nothing to clean or polish this carving, since I realize collectors often want objects in "as found" condition. It is fairly primitively carved, but bears a very nice ambiance. See the photos below for more details.
