Savu Ikat Selandang #2

Finely woven Savu cloth with warp-ikat figures
This textile was purchased ca. 1990 on a trip to Indonesia, probably in Bali. We were told it was 20-30 years old at the time.

This cloth was hand woven of cotton on the island of Savu. It is a type of incidental cloth which called a selandang. The weave is fine cotton, in warp-face plain weave with designs in warp ikat. All dyes are vegetal dyes. Long twisted warp fringes decorate both ends. The textile was woven in 2 panels and jointed longitudinally. Dimensions are 36 inches wide and 68 inches long, excluding the fringes.

Condition is excellent, no holes or stains, only some light wear and/or soil is possible. All colors remain bright and sharp with no sunfading. In the photos below, the warp always runs horizontally. The first image shows approximately half of the garment, the other half is a mirror image with similar figures at the end.
