Most of the rebozos used by Maya Indian women in Guatemala are made in the textile-producing towns of Quetzaltenango and Totonicapan. In some villages, however, the shawls are produced locally. Such is the case with many of the villages around Lake Atitlan.

This shawl was produced in the village of Santa Cruz la Laguna, and dates from the 2000s. It was woven in a single wide panel on a backstrap loom, and is mixed cotton and synthetic threads woven in warp-faced plain weave. There are also a very few warp threads of a glittery metallic or plastic material, giving the shawl a more vibrant appearance. Much of the design features small muneca figures of warp-ikat. The fringes on one end show nice braided details; the other end has a selvage finish. Rebozos similar to this are also used in many other of the Lake Atitlan villages.

Dimensions: approximately 24 inches wide and 78 inches long, including the fringes.

Condition: Excellent, very lightly used, some light soil possible.
