Product Description
Oil painting measuring 16 x 20 inches showing traditional Maya dentist
Pascual pur Gonzalez is a contemporary Maya painter who lives in Santiago Atitlan. Curanderos or doctors are a respected segment of traditional Mayan culture. They have traditionally performed their services using a mixture of religion, witchcraft, herbal medicines and common sense. As can be imagined, traditional dental services were fairly primitive. Recently, a number of American and Canadian doctors have visited the Lake Atitlan region of southern Guatemala as volunteers, providing free or very low cost medical aid to the peoples. These surgeons can perform more complicated dental surgical procedures than the local doctor, probably with considerably less pain.
