Product Description
Traditional 1970s style shawl measuring 26 inches wide and 64 inches long, made ca. 2000
This traditional 1970s style shawl or tzute was made in the Ixil Maya town of Santa Maria Nebaj. It was woven in 2 narrow panels on a backstrap loom, using warp-faced plain weave. The two panels were then joined along a long edge, and the decoration was added using hand embroidery. This shawl probably dates from post 2000, and the condition is excellent, with possibly some light soil. The photo below shows the design on one end, which is the same as the other end.
