Matias Gonzalez Chavajay is of the second generation of painters from San Pedro la Laguna. He was born in San Pedro in 1959 (or 1960, by another source) and learned to paint from his older brother Mariano. His uncle Rafael González y González was the first of the San Pedro painters. He is considered to be one of "the most distinguished painters in San Pedro La Laguna". Many of his paintings are sold in the galleries of Santiago Atitlan. He has exhibited widely both in Guatemala and in galleries outside the country, where he has gained numerous awards. He is represented in the UNESCO book titled Arte Naif -- Guatemala, published in 1998.
