Product Description
Oil on canvas measuring 20 x 36 inches, stretched and framed
Oil painting on canvas measuring 20 x 36 inches, stretched and framed with simple black metal frame. Signed lower right by the artist "Juan David", a contemporary painter from Santiago Atitlan. Depicted are two women from the small town of Zacualpa, deep in the highlands of rural Guatemala. They are carrying baskets on their head, a traditional way for Maya women to carry a heavy load. Are they on their way to market, or now returning? Or is that the daily laundry they are carrying to the stream or local pila? Juan David is a very talented artist whose output is small, I have only seen a few of his paintings in 10 years of visiting Guatemala. The image below is a close-up of the women.
