Product Description
Fully brocaded woman's huipil with weaver's name on each panel
This post-1980 woman's huipil was hand-woven on a backstrap loom. The foundation fabric is cotton. The finely-brocaded geometric designs were added during the weaving process using the technique of supplemental-weft brocading. All brocading is of cotton threads. The huipil consists of three panels, seemed at the edges to form the garment. The lower edges are somewhat uneven but are nicely selvage-finished. The adornment around the head- and arm-holes is retained. The stitching at the sides, which makes the huipil into a finished garment to be used, has been removed. The brocaded designs are on all three panels and are very fine. Each panel appears to bear the weaver's name brocaded into the design -- see the bottom photo. My reading is "PAULINA CARILLO GARCIA 11 DE NObIEMbRE". Whether this is the weaver's birth or marriage date (or something else) is unclear.
Measurements: 29 inches wide across the body, and 30 inches, more or less, shoulder to hem.
Condition: Very Good, lightly used, shows some slight wear.
