Huipil Santa Cruz la Laguna #5

Large woman's huipil measuring approximately 33 inches wide and 32 inches long

This post-1980 daily use huipil was hand-woven on a backstrap loom. The foundation fabric is cotton, with somewhat of a supple sheen. The large geometric design panel was added during the weaving process using supplemental weft brocading.  The additional design work around the neck was added after the weaving process was finished using needle embroidery and applique. These were made using mostly synthetic yarns. It consists of two panels, seemed down the center. All lower edges are loosely hemmed. The adornment around the head- and arm-holes is retained. The side stitching (which made the huipil into a finished garment to be used) is still present.

Measurements: approximately 33 inches wide (average) and 32 inches long.

Condition: Excellent, lightly used, some loose threads are possible.

Santa Cruz la Laguna huipiles are unusual in that the decorations on the front and back are different, the back having most of the design. Both sides are shown, with the back coming first.
