Product Description
Oil on canvas measuring 16 x 20 inches, depicting the worship of Maximom in Santiago Atitlan
Oil painting on canvas measuring 16 x 20 inches, stretched. Signed by the artist "Domingo Jonatan" in the lower left, titled "Maximom" in the lower right. Maximom is a folk saint locally worshipped in Santiago Atitlan. Paintings of this subject have recently become quite uncommon, with the growing influence of Christian Evangelicalism in the towns around the lake. This painting is quite detailed and a very interesting treatment, with men, women and children all taking part in the worship. Note also the two small bottles of the local firewater on the floor in the foreground. Drinking this high-potency brandy is often a part of the worship service.
