Product Description
Tecpan Guatemala child's hat.
This child's gorra was woven in a single panel on a backstrap loom. It is from the Maya town of Tecpan, located near the ancient colonial capital of Antigua in southern Guatemala. It is still sewed together as used. It measures 7.8 inches wide and approx. 6 inches in diameter. All edges of the panel are selvage-finished. Condition is Very Good, perhaps with some slight soil. Age is approximately 5-10 years, purchased in 2019. The pictures below are of the two sides. The final photo shows how the supplemental weft of the design floats on the inside of the closed hat. This example is unusual in that the entire exposed surface of the finished hat is covered in brocaded design.
