- Antonio pur Gonzalez -- Childbirth #2
Product Description
Oil painting measuring 16 x 20 inches, showing traditional Maya childbirth
Jose Antonio pur Gonzalez is a contemporary Maya painter who lives in Santiago Atitlan. Curanderos or doctors are a respected segment of traditional Mayan culture. They have traditionally performed their services using a mixture of religion, witchcraft, herbal medicines and common sense. Maya women often use the services of the local midwife, who is trained to assist in a normal birthing procedure. Recently, a number of American and Canadian doctors have visited the Lake Atitlan region of southern Guatemala as volunteers, providing free or very low cost medical aid to the peoples. These surgeons can perform more complicated ob/gyn surgical procedures than the local doctor, and advise on the treatment of more complicated cases.
