Gourd etching and painting is a common pastime and commercial venture for residents of the department Baja Verapaz. Many of these items are then used as toys and souvenirs.

This particular etched gourd is a half sphere and measures 3.8 inches in diameter. A large palm tree and a big dog flank each side of the thatched-roof house. Along the top edge it says "Recuerdo de Rabinal B. V." (souvenir of Rabinal, Baja Verapaz).
