Hector Moncayo signs his work "H. Moncayo". He was the patriarch of a large family of painters in Ecuador. He was born around 1895 (exact date is uncertain) and died in 1984. He attended art school for a short time at an early age, but left soon and began to paint for a living in 1908. He painted numerous Andean scenes, and the one pictured here is typical. However, he was "probably best known for his portraits, especially those of old men and old women". He worked all his life, and shared his talents with his wife, sons and numerous other relatives. Though not related, he was a long-time friend of the other Moncayo patriarch, Emilio.

Oil painted on canvas, then mounted on hardboard; framed in a possibly period gold gilt wood frame. Size of painting is 21.5 x 16.5 inches without the frame, 24.5 x 19.5 inches including the frame. This is a typical painting of an Andean shepherd entertaining his llamas. A typical Ecuadorean volcano is in the background. The painting is clean and in very nice condition. Signed lower right "H. Moncayo". There is no title.
