Emilio Moncayo -- Mt. Chimborazo

Manufacturer: N/A
SKU: Ec-P-M-8A
Price: $800.00
This item is in stock
Quantity:
Oil painting on canvas, which has then been mounted on masonite hardboard, measuring approximately 32 x 21 inches. The painting is as found, enclosed in original elegant gold painted carved custom frame. The paint layer is quite stable, showing no craquelure, and does not appear to need cleaning. Signed "E. Moncayo" in the lower right. The photos which follow show closeups of various areas of the painting, as well as of the signature. The paper note on the back indicates that the painting was bought in the early 1950s.

Emilio Moncayo was born in Quito, Ecuador, in 1895, and died in 1970. He started painting at a young age, winning national art awards as early as 1930. He painted widely in his native country, his favorite subject being the natives of the high Andes, living their daily lives in a landscape that usually included the local volcano. He was a noted portrait painter as well. These scenes of village life and architecture are somewhat unusual, and probably date from the period 1930-1950. Emilio had a number of children and grand-children who followed in his footsteps as artists. He is considered the patriarch of one of the Moncayo families of painters.
