Ceremonial Huipil Magdalenas, Chiapas

Ceremonial Huipil Magdalenas, Chiapas

Manufacturer: N/A
SKU: M-T-H-Ch-1
Price: $295.00
This item is out of stock
Quantity:
This is a very traditional ceremonial huipil from the Tzotzil Maya town of Magdalenas, Chiapas, Mexico. It was all handwoven in three panels on a back-strap loom. All edges are beautifully selvage-finished. The seems where the panels have been joined are covered in a decorative silk or satin fabric, which adds a richness to the garment. The foundation fabric is extremely fine wool. The designs were added during the weaving process using supplemental weft brocading. It is all hand-spun wool, which is vegetal-dyed. The designs are traditional, and have meaning in the Tzotzil cosmology.

This huipil has the appearance of being recently woven. It is in excellent condition, with no wear and perhaps some very slight soil. It have seen pictures in the literature, however, of huipiles over 50 years old that look very similar.

Dimensions: Center panel 16.5 inches wide, side panels 9.3 inches wide, total width approx. 35 inches; total length shoulder to hem 27.5 inches.

Condition: Excellent, very lightly used, some light soil possible. This is a truly wonderful huipil.
