Antonio Coche Mendoza was born in the Tzutujil Maya village of San Juan la Laguna on Lake Atitlan in March of 1968. He began to draw with crayons and tempera on paper at age 7, and in 1980 began to paint in oil on canvas. He was the first person to paint in this popular art style in San Juan. He has exhibited widely both in Guatemala and in galleries outside the country, where he has gained numerous awards. He is represented in the UNESCO book titled Arte Naif -- Guatemala, published in 1998. Two different paintings by Antonio Coche are pictured in that book.

Oil painting on canvas measuring 32 x 25 inches, unstretched. The painting will be mailed rolled in a hard tube. Signed "Antonio Coche Mendoza" in the lower left corner, untitled but verbally indicated by the artist as "Ceremonia Maya Atitlan". The painting depicts a traditional Tzutujil Maya offering in a cave overlooking Lake Atitlan. It was painted ca. 2008. The images below are of the entire painting, followed by close-up photos of different parts. After that are photos of the Mendoza gallery in San Juan and of Antonio and his wife Angelina in their sales room.
