Very finely woven contemporary huipil, all natural handspun cotton.
This is a very finely woven huipil from Amusgos, Oaxaca. It was all handwoven in three panels on a back-strap loom. All edges are loosely hemmed. The seems where the panels have been joined are finely hand-stitched in natural white cotton thread, and the sides are seamed in the same manner. The foundation fabric is fine natural brown cotton. All threads apear to be handspun. The designs were added during the weaving process using supplemental weft brocading. It is all of white natural handspun cotton thread.
This huipil appears recently woven. It is in excellent condition, with no wear.
Dimensions: all panels are of equal width; total width approx. 34 inches; total length shoulder to hem 44 inches.
Condition: Excellent, never used, very light fold marks from storage. Age uncertain, the woman collected over a 50-year period. Though both sides of the garment are quite similar, I have taken photos of both for completeness.
