Contemporary huipil from Tamahu, in the Alta Verapaz, unfinished.
This ca. 2015 huipil was hand-woven on a backstrap loom. The foundation fabric is plain black cotton in the 3 panels. The designs were added during the weaving process using the technique of supplemental-weft brocading, and they are of entirely cotton threads. The huipil consists of three panels, seemed together at the joints. As can be seen in the photos, the head-hole has not been cut in the center, though there is a blank space without decoration. The side stitching, which makes the weaving into a finished garment to be worn, is also not present..
Measurements: 39 inches wide and 17.5 inches long shoulder to hem; the entire fabric thus measures 39 x 35 inches
Condition: Excellent, lightly used, a few loose threads.
