Older huipil from Tactic, in the Alta Verapaz
This post-1980 huipil was hand-woven on a backstrap loom. The foundation fabric is plain black cotton in the 3 panels. The designs were added during the weaving process using the technique of supplemental-weft brocading, and they are of entirely cotton threads. The huipil consists of three panels, seemed together at the joints. An extra piece of blue commercial cotton cloth has been added along the bottom edge to lengthen the garment where it goes inside the skirt. Also, the side stitching has been tapered for a more natural fit, and vertical seams have been sewn into the garment for the same result. The sides of the garment are closed as used.
Measurements: 31 inches wide across the shoulders, tapering to 29 inches at the waist, and 24 inches long
Condition: Excellent, lightly used, a very few loose threads. Thiss garment was purchased in 1997.
