Hector Moncayo signs his work "H. Moncayo". He was the patriarch of a large family of painters in Ecuador. He was born around 1895 (exact date is uncertain) and died in 1984. He attended art school for a short time at an early age, but left soon and began to paint for a living in 1908. He painted numerous Andean scenes. However, he was "probably best known for his portraits, especially those of old men and old women". The two pictured here are typical of this latter type. He worked all his life, and shared his talents with his wife, sons and numerous other relatives. Though not related, he was a long-time friend of the other Moncayo patriarch, Emilio.
Oil painted on canvas, stretched over a thin wood stretcher. The paintings are framed in matching older hand-carved mahogany wood frames. Size of each painting is 22 x 17 inches without the frame, 28 x 23 inches including the frame. The paintings are typical of Moncayo's later work. Both are signed lower right "H. Moncayo".
Condition is "as found", meaning that I have done no restoration. The frames are totally intact, with no breaks or missing pieces, but slightly dusty. The old man has a couple small repairs (see photo) and the old woman a few very light diagonal rubs (see final photo) which do not penetrate the paint. The frames are beautifully carved and quite nice.
