The Makonde people of Mozambique have carved naturalistic helmet masks such as this one. They are said to be associated with male and female initiation ceremonies. Maximum dimensions of this mask are 11 inches front to back, 8 inches wide and 8 inches tall. It is carved from a single piece of wood. I would guess it dates from before 1950, but ages are hard to determine for African carvings. It has a nice rich and mellow used patina, with some obvious rubbing and handling. There are the normal signs of usage, with light rubbing and some dust all over, but is in overall in Very Good used condition. There is a short crack in the forehead, about three inches long, but this causes no structural problem since it is very narrow and closed at both ends. See the photos below for more details.
