This ca. 1970s sobrehuipil was hand-woven on a backstrap loom. The foundation is of 100% cotton, and is of very traditional design. The unusual aspect is that it lacks any brocaded design. It consists of three panels, seemed together with a very fine though simple stitch. There is a horizontal ridged texture to the fabric which results from a systematic use of weft threads of heavier, thicker consistency than the majority. All six of the lower panel edges are selvage-finished. Original adornment around the head-hole is retained. The sides of the garment are stitched. This is a quite attractive example of an unusual San Juan sobrehuipil.
