This is a traditional Chichicastenango tzute made in the past 20 years. It was handwoven on a backstrap loom in two panels, then joined with a decorative randa down the center. The two lower edges are selvage-finished, the top edges are hemmed. Dimensions are 38 inches wide and 36 inches long. Background fabric is red cotton with thin stripes. The brocaded designs are mostly cotton floss, but there may also be some synthetic threads. The largest figures are 4 large horses, facing left; there are also some smaller figures of 6 horses with riders, and 6 of the Maya "aguila de dos cabezas" (eagle with two heads). Condition is very good, perhaps there are a few loose threads and some light soil, since this is a used tzute, but there are no holes or stains.
