The Mam Maya people of Huehuetenango Department, at the western end of the Chuchumatanes Mountains, produce huipils that are similar in style but show village-specific characteristics. The huipil is short, relatively wide and is worn hanging loose outside the corte. The brocade often includes small, multi-colored diamonds or squares woven in a soumak technique over a red and white warp-striped base cloth and often extends lower in the central panel than across the shoulders. In San Ildefonso, additional colorful embroidery is added around the neck in a wide band.

This very nice post-1980 huipil was handwoven on a backstrap loom in three panels, which have been joined using a simple hand stitch. Two lower edges are nicely selvage finished, the other two are hemmed. Dimensions are 28 inches wide and approximately 19.5 inches long. It is in very good though used condition. There is thus some light wear and a few loose threads. The side stitching has been retained, making this a readily usable garment. Overall, this is an excellent example of a somewhat contemporary weaving.
