Wax resist dyed batik cloth is made in many parts of Indonesia, but much of the production of cloth for cotton sarongs is done on the islands of Java and Sumatra. In batik cap or block batik most of the pattern is made by transfer of the design using a carved wood block. In batik tulis most of the design is done using free-style hand drawing.
This selandang is a very finely designed batik tulis. The Indonesian selandang is a multi-purpose cloth, which can be used by the woman as a shawl, but also as a carrying cloth or table covering. This particular textile measures 20 inches wide and 85 inches long. There are broad multiple bands at both ends; the first photo below shows only part of the total textile. One of the long sides is selvage-finished, the ends and the other side are all finely hemmed. This batik is from Yogyakarta, in central Java.
This textile was bought in Java in the 1990s and was new at the time. It is still in fresh and new condition.
