Wax resist dyed batik cloth is made in many parts of Indonesia, but much of the production of cloth for cotton sarongs is done on the islands of Java and Sumatra. In batik cap or block batik most of the pattern is made by transfer of the design using a carved wood block. In batik tulis most of the design is done using free-style hand drawing.
This sarong is a very finely designed batik cap. It measures 40 inches wide and 73 inches long. Sumatran sarongs are typically asymmetric in design. This design is quite intricate with multiple diamonds down one side. There is a narrow 2-inch wide border along both sides, but none at the ends. The sides are selvage-finished, the ends are cut but not hemmed. This batik is from central Sumatra, probably bought in Bukittinggi.
This textile was bought in Sumatra in the 1990s and was new at the time. It is still in fresh and new condition.
