Chichicastenango Man's Tzute from 1960s

Chichicastenango Man's Tzute from 1960s

Manufacturer: N/A
SKU: G-T-Tz-CC-1
Price: $240.00

Quantity:
This man's tzute is of the style usually allocated to the early 1960s. The use of the floral design corresponds to the woman's huipiles from that period. This example has a base of red cotton with widely space vertical black stripes. It was woven in two panels on a backstrap loom. The panels were then joined with a decorative randa stitch. Two ends are nicely selvage-finished, two are hemmed. The floral designs, added during the weaving process using the technique of supplemental weft brocading are also of cotton.

Overall dimensions are 32 inches wide and 30 inches long. The applied tassels at the four corners are also of cotton. This garment was obviously heavily used, since there is significant soil, head grease, and smoke residue. A quarter coin in the upper right portion is close to a spot of bright orange paint (?), which is shown in the final photo. Otherwise, this tzute is in very good used condition, with no holes and only a few loose threads. It is an early and scarce example.
