This is an all wool man's poncho from one of the Inca villages around Cuzco, Peru. It is one of three textiles I purchased from a woman who had visited Cuzco, and she had purchased these textiles in the nearby markets. It is beautiful and very finely woven. Overall dimensions are 44 x 37 inches; there is an additional 2-3 inch fringe which was made separately and applied with hand sewing. It is made from handspun wool, hand-woven on an Andean loom. The two equal panels are sewn together with a fine but simple zig-zag stitch in the center red stripe. The space which had originally been left for the man's head was later sewn together with a slightly different stitch, also of red wool. All dyes appear to be synthetic in origin, though some natural dyes may also be present. There is no tubular edging around the garment, but all 4 sides have the applied fringe.

The age of this poncho is uncertain, but appears to be post-1980.

Condition is excellent, with slight odor of mothballs from storage. The brocaded designs are particularly finely executed. There are also slight folds from storage, and some very slight soil since the garment has not been recently washed. The applied fringe is loose in a couple very short stretches, as is seen in the final photo.
