Large oil painting on canvas, framed in Guatemala
Oscar Peren lives and works in the Kakchiquel Maya town of San Juan Comalapa, which has a 60+ year history of painters in the naif style. He was born in 1950, and currently lives and works with his family in his Gallery in Comalapa. He has exhibited widely in his home country, and a number of his paintings are represented in the book Arte Naif Guatemala published by UNESCO in 1998.
Oscar paints today in two distinctly different styles. He still paints his unique scenes of Guatemalan village life, especially in his native town of San Juan Comalapa, in his unique naif style. He also paints in a more contemporary "Western" style depicting landscapes in southern Guatemala. This very detailed and large painting exemplifies his proficiency in this latter style.
Large painting on canvas measuring 40 x 30 inches. It was purchased in 2006 from Peren's gallery in Comalapa, and bears the original wood frame as displayed in the gallery. Overall dimensions are just under 46 x 36 inches. It is signed and titled in the lower left corner "Atitlan, O. Peren". Oscar told me it is a styllized view of the provincial capital of Solola, with Volcan Atitlan and Lake Atitlan in the background. Solola does not lie on the shores of the lake, as it may appear from the image, but can be seen in the background from certain vantages within the town.
