Product Description

The Maya Indian men, particularly those in the altiplano around the town of Nahuala, carve wooden items for their daily use. Pipes and hondas (slingshots) are the items most commonly encountered.

This is very well-carved wooden slingshot depicting a Quetzal, the national bird of Guatemala. It has a slight patina from handling, but is of contemporary manufacture. This may have been made for actual use, or of a somewhat more complicated "artistic" style to be sold to tourists. In either case, it is usable if equipped with the rubber sling. It is carved from a hardwood, and looks like maple or cherry. Overall length is about 8.5 inches. A nice example of typical indigenous manufacture.
