Felipe Ujpan Mendoza lives in the Tzutujil Maya village of San Juan la Laguna on Lake Atitlan. He has exhibited widely in Guatemala, and is represented in the UNESCO book titled Arte Naif -- Guatemala, published in 1998. Two different paintings by Felipe Ujpan are pictured in that book.
Oil painting on canvas measuring 30 x 40 inches, unstretched . Signed "Felipe Ujpan M." in the lower left corner. The painting depicts a traditional fiesta scene in many Maya villages in Guatemala, mostly in the department of Sacatepequez. The painting was purchased from the artist in his gallery in San Juan la Laguna, in 2020. This is a large painting and will be mailed rolled in a hard tube.
Flying large kites is a part of many Guatemalan Maya village festivals. Felipe told me that this particular image is much larger than normal, and is meant to depict the unity of all the Maya people of Guatemala. In the center is an image of Lake Atitlan and its 3 volcanoes, an iconic image for the Guatemalan people.
