Oil painting on stretched canvas measuring 23.5 x 33 inches
Most painters of Guatemalan naive art are from either San Juan Comalapa or one of the Tzutujil Maya villages around Lake Atitlan. In these two areas this artistic style originated. The UNESCO book Arte Naif -- Guatemala, published in 1998, lists one artist from the Quiche Maya community of San Antonio Ilotenango. His name is Vicente Simaj Yat. I presume this painting is by a relative.
Though pictured unstretched, this painting has since been strectched and measures 23.5 x 33 inches, oil on canvas. Signed lower right "ELEAZAR SIMAJ A." and titles lower left "San Antonio Ilotenango", this is a view of his village in the Departmento del Quiche. This painting appears to be from the 1980s or 1990s, but this is just a guess. Refer to the following photos for an assessment.
